Type 1 Diabetes – More Than Just Avoiding Sugar

About 1.25 million Americans currently live with Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Insulin is an essential hormone that regulates the amount of sugar, or glucose, in the blood.

In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakes cells in the pancreas for bad guys, and destroys them. Because the pancreas can no longer make insulin, people with T1D must take insulin injections every day and with every meal. Unlike Type 2 diabetes, the more common form of diabetes, Type 1 is neither preventable nor curable.

T1D affects everyone differently, but often the 24/7 burden of diabetes management is not fully understood. Today we’re talking with 2 of our very own employees here at Jumo Health about their everyday reality of living with Type 1 diabetes.
